Hiroshige's Kanabara

An exceptional woodblook print by the famed ukyo-e master, Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858), this scene of winter Kanabara (a rural district) has the soft, dreamlike quality of a painting. Instead, it was printed from a series of overlapping woodblocks, each block printing a separate color. Such extraordinary technique inspired and revolutionized Western art and art reproduction.
